What $50 Will Get You

Not much!

From time to time I get offered money at ridiculously low prices to do “Make it Hot” work from prospective clients. These individuals obviously do not understand the value of custom design work.

Not too long ago, I was offered $50 to design a logo for a guy’s company. A company where by the way DVDs are sold at 20 dollars a pop online. Basically, he wanted me to upgrade his brand. But wait!! Wouldn’t this also boost his sales and revenue? Of course it would. Consumers take seriously companies with professional branding. Art vs. Design: What’s the difference?

Art vs Design

We’ve all heard and seen this before:

“Immediate open for a qualified Graphic Artist.”

Graphic Designer needed for a 6 month contract.”

Graphic Designer, Graphic Artist, it’s all the same thing right? Wrong. Let me break it down for you. First we’ll have to examine the difference between the 2.

ART:

This is a creative piece made by someone for the shear pleasure of creating it, for themselves. There are no rules. The Artist can create whatever their heart desires without deadlines or correction.

DESIGN:

This is a creative piece created by a someone with clear intent on what is expected as the final result. It is usually made for someone other than the person who is creating it. Several revisions can be made before there is a final version.

The 2 terms get used often as if they have the same meaning. This isn’t a real big deal, but it’s just something I wanted to point out.

Design… That is the question.

When it comes to design, there are several categories that come to mind. Motion graphics, print, web and ui design, just to name a few. What do they all have in common? These specific concentrations all focus on promoting an idea, a purpose or a product. Design makes what starts off on paper tangible in the visual realm.

Don’t judge a book by the cover!

That’s how the ole saying goes. Which brings up a great point. This saying was originally created because people would buy a particular book, based solely on the Design of its cover. It did not matter how well the story was written. If the book’s designed cover were cool looking enough, the sales would definitely be a reflection of what the readers were attracted to visually. It seems as though this applies to branding across all forms of media. Whether if it’s the Design for an album cover or a banner on a website, the Branding is the first thing that the consumer sees and it plays a major role in their decision to buy into the product or not. » Read more..
